Transmissions Are Serviced in Different Ways
Changing a car's engine oil and filter is a basic procedure that most people understand and there's really only one way to do it regardless of whether you're a "do-it-yourselfer" in your driveway or a master technician in a full-service garage. Remove the engine's drain plug, drain the old oil, replace the plug, unscrew the old filter, screw on the new one and pour new oil into the filler hole on top of the motor.
Most auto repair and fast-lube facilities also offer some type of transmission "service" or "flush" to change the automatic transmission fluid. However, almost all automatic transmissions have no drain plug, and no easy drain-plug method of changing the fluid like engines do. Therefore, replacing the fluid in an automatic transmission must be done using one of several different methods or procedures that most customers don't understand, but these methods are all called the same thing, a "transmission service".
These methods vary greatly in both efficiency and effectiveness. You deserve to be shown the important differences between these service methods so that you can decide which method is best for your car. Even though the automatic transmission is the most complex and mysterious part of today's automobile, we've provided clear, understandable explanations and illustrations of these methods. Please review the Service Type links on this page to help you make a sensible, informed decision.
