What Transmission Fluid Does the Manufacturer Call For?
Beginning in the late 1990s and early 2000's auto manufacturers have required the use of new, specially formulated transmission fluids they have engineered for their new and updated transmissions. The big improvement in the new fluid is they use a higher refined mineral or synthetic base oil and then their additive packages are added to that. These new high-tech fluids make a transmission shift and "feel" the way they are designed to, perform properly over a wider range of temperatures, are compatible with the electronic transmission control components and stand up to the higher demands the today's transmissions subject the transmission fluid to. We are seeing the newer fluids lasting longer. They are also more expensive, sometimes substantially so. The specified fluid for a particular car is often stated on the transmission dipstick or owner's manual. It is important to use a fluid that meets or exceeds the manufacture's specifications.
